What to Do When a Loved One Passes Away

Date: 2 Oct 2025

Losing a loved one can be overwhelming. Having a checklist of what to do can make the first few days easier to navigate.

Step 1: Get a Medical Certificate of Cause of Death

Contact the doctor or hospital to certify the death. This is the first step in registering the death officially.

Step 2: Inform Family and Friends

Reach out to close family first, then friends and others who should know.

Step 3: Contact a Funeral Director

They can guide you through funeral arrangements, legal requirements, and paperwork.

Step 4: Register the Death

In New Zealand, deaths must be registered with the Department of Internal Affairs within 3 working days of burial or cremation.

Step 5: Begin Funeral Planning

Discuss the deceased’s wishes, budget, and preferred type of service (funeral or memorial).

Taking one step at a time can make an overwhelming situation feel more manageable.
